The two current vacancies are for Librarian I/II for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries in the following assignments: 1) Teen Services at the Downtown Branch 2) Life Literacy Center Librarian I/II at the Downtown Branch. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other Regular and Temporary Librarian I/II vacancies that may occur during the life of the list, to include but not limited to other areas of assignment such as Adult Services, Youth Services, Outreach, Collection Management Services, and Generalist (All Ages) in any branch of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries. The eligibility list established from this recruitment is valid for up to one year from the date established unless the list is extended or abolished by the Human Resources Director.
The Teen Librarian I/II at the Downtown Branch (current Vacancy) is responsible for designing, creating and delivering programs and services for teens at the Downtown branch. They will work 3-4 scheduled desk shifts per week at the Youth Services Reference Desk, providing reference, information and readers’ advisory assistance to youth and the adults who care for them and work with them. The Teen Librarian will maintain a regular presence in the Teen area during after-school hours, offering programs, reference, information and readers’ advisory services to Teens and the adults who support them. They will also lead class visits and conduct outreach to schools served by the Downtown branch, participate in community engagement and outreach events, and collaborate with community organizations and agencies supporting Teens countywide. The Teen Librarian will work closely with the Downtown branch staff team, the librarians in neighboring branches, the Youth Programs systemwide team, and the Librarians Team.
The Life Literacy Center Librarian I/II at the Downtown Branch (current vacancy): This Librarian position is based at the Downtown library branch and focuses on serving vulnerable populations. The work assignment involves managing the operations of the Life Literacies Center and fostering partnerships related to life literacies, such as working with social services agencies. The librarian will represent the library at offsite community engagement events. The role includes participation in the Adult Programs and Services systemwide team and the Downtown library branch staff team. A key focus will be contributing to strategic plan initiatives centered on inclusion, the Downtown branch, and enhancing services for vulnerable patrons. The librarian will have regular reference desk shifts at the branch. The work schedule will include either Saturdays or Sundays.

Minimum qualifications for the Librarian I are a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) or Librarianship. The Librarian II also requires one year of supervisory experience in a professional setting. The bilingual ability to speak Spanish is not required, but is a very highly desirable qualification. MLIS degree in progress with a graduation date within six (6) months from date of application may be considered.
