XENOPHON THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER
Xenophon is a transformative, compassionate, and inclusive non-profit 501(c)(3) registered charity located in serene Orinda, California. Our mission is to enrich the lives of children and adults with disabilities, and veterans of all theaters, through high quality programs of equine-assisted activities and therapies that foster confidence, connection, and growth in a safe, supportive environment. Xenophon is a certified member of PATH International and the winner of numerous international awards for our programs, staff, and herd.
We are currently seeking a ¾ time Executive Director to guide our center.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Xenophon is seeking an experienced nonprofit professional to lead all aspects of our organization, with the primary focus being fundraising for the organization. The majority of the role of the Executive Director will be outward focused: cultivating donors and relationships. The Executive Director will also manage a team of dedicated staff and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of our center. Working with the Board of Directors and the Program Director, the Executive Director will build the strategy and vision for Xenophon’s future, taking an active and creative role in shaping the impact of the organization for years to come.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Management & Leadership
Oversees the Xenophon organization as a whole, including staff, instructors, volunteers, etc.
Fosters an organizational culture of safety and support for all staff, instructors, volunteers, and families.
Works with the Board and Program Director to develop a multi-year strategic fundraising plan, defining the future solvency of the organization.
Works with the Board and Program Director to develop an annual operating plan in accordance with a multi-year strategic plan.
Develops and shares annual surveys of staff, instructors, volunteers, and families.
Maintains compliance with all state, federal, PATH, and employee-related statutes.
Finance
Develops and maintains annual organizational operating budget in partnership with Program Director and Board Treasurer. Presents budget annually to the Board.
Oversees organizations total operating budget, ensuring diverse and sustainable revenue streams.
Fundraising & Marketing
Ensures adequate funds are raised to operate the organization and to maintain a solvent financial position.
Develops and executes annual fundraising plan, including but not limited to major gifts, corporate sponsorships, and capital campaigns.
Cultivates and maintains relationships with donors and potential donors, building and maintaining high touch relationships with high net worth individuals and foundations.
Represents the organization in the media and at community events to build brand awareness and trust.
Maintains relationships with local community leaders.
Writes and submits grant proposals.
Co-Chairperson of annual gala fundraising event.
Acts as Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee, driving the work of that committee, choosing members to serve on the committee, and keeping the board appraised on Fundraising Committee meetings and activities.
Develops and organizes additional fundraising activities.
Supervises the development and implementation of a public relations strategy.
Along with the Board President, is the lead spokesperson for the organization.
Board Governance
Aids in recruitment of members of the Board of Directors.
Advises Board on policy and strategic matters and ensures that the Board has accurate and up-to-date information to provide necessary oversight and strategic input.
Proactively keeps the Board fully informed of relevant personnel, financial, programmatic, and related matters that significantly affect the ability of Xenophon to carry out its mission.
Works in conjunction with the Board President.
Acts as Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee, driving the work of that committee, choosing members to serve on the committee, and keeping the board appraised on Fundraising Committee meetings and activities.
Shares results of surveys with the Board annually.
Program
Supervises the Program Director’s planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and center operations.
Conducts periodic evaluations of the administrative and program operations.
Attends the annual PATH Conference with staff and instructors.
Staff Leadership and Development
Works closely with Program Director and other staff to foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, creativity and innovation among staff and volunteers.
Hires new staff and instructors with input from the Program Director.
Conducts annual performance evaluation of the Program Director.
Assists with staff evaluations performed by the Program Director.
Is responsible for any terminations, offboarding, exit interviews, etc. as needed.
Maintains a collaborative, positive culture that attracts and retains staff and volunteers
Requirements
ROLE QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years senior non-profit/development experience (horse experience is not required, but must be comfortable around equines and have a willingness to learn).
Track record of securing donations from individuals and foundations to meet fundraising goals, or successfully leading capital fund campaigns.
Exceptional interpersonal skills.
Strong verbal and written communications skills and ability to be an inspiring speaker.
Ability to hold a long-term vision while executing tactically in day-to-day operations.
Excellent organization skills, detail orientation, and capacity to manage a high volume of work.
Confident in leading others and setting a standard for persistence, integrity, safety, and creativity.

REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree required: advanced degree in Nonprofit Management or MBA preferred.
