POSITION SUMMARY:
This has the opportunity to be a year-round position that works with the Outdoor Science School and Childcare departments during the school year, and Overnight Summer Camp during the summer. During the OSS program, unit leaders will take the lead, or assist with all non-curriculum aspects of the program including volunteer training and supervision, student behavior management, and recreational programming. During the summer, unit leaders will be responsible for the assigned unit and assist in staff training and development throughout summer season. Unit Leaders are hired for their unique skills in working a particular age group: Trailblazers (7-9 year olds), Trekkers (10-12 year olds), Teens (13-15 year olds), Leader in Trainings (15-16 year olds), or Counselor in Trainings (16-17 year olds).
SALARY RANGE:
$800-$825/week
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Assist the camp leadership team in planning and executing pre-camp and in-service staff training, and creating staff survival manuals.
-Responsible for programs related to specific assigned unit including but not limited to: evening programs, campfires, morning inspirations, daily and weekly schedules, and skill based program areas.
-Directly supervise and appraise the counselors in assigned unit.
-Maintain proper records as required by camp director.
-Coordinate matters of interest in areas of overlapping responsibility while always seeking the best solution for campers and the camp.
-Check in with counselors in unit daily; provide appropriate support and leadership for each counselor.
-Attend all meals and all camp events (unless cleared by director).
-Perform chosen "coordinator duties" each week.
-Use established system for communication with other camp departments.
-Assist in behavior management when needed and document all events.
-Responsible for the health and welfare of campers/staff in assigned unit.
-Be able to communicate and work well with other members of the leadership team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Be able to assist with the training of all staff
Be able to work and communicate well with a variety of age groups
Have visual ability recognize hazards in the camp setting the auditory ability to respond appropriately to those hazards
Be able to observe camper and staff behavior in daily camp file, to respond to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with the improper behavior
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience as a group counselor or staff member in a camp setting (experience at programming in a camp setting preferred)
Supervisory experience preferred
Flexibility and maturity, with ability to be self-motivated and work with minimum supervision
Ability to relate to peers as well as youth effectively
CPR and First Aid certified (can be obtained upon hire)
Preferred YMCA approved driver
