Description
The General Surgery Residency Program at the University of California, San Francisco has an ACGME-accredited CATEGORICAL training position available at the PGY3 level beginning June 21st, 2026. Please see the specific requirements and instructions for applying below.
PREREQUISITES (no exceptions):
Successful completion in good standing of TWO years of US clinical training in an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency training program (or currently enrolled in a PGY2 position for the 2025-26 academic year).
Must be eligible to apply for a Physician & Surgeon’s license (Medical Board of California):
1. United States and Canada medical school graduates: Received 12 months credit of Board-approved postgraduate training.
2. Graduates of International medical schools approved under BPC section 2084: Received 24 months credit of postgraduate training.
3. Postgraduate training must be accredited by either of the following: 1) Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and completed in the United States and its territories; or 2) Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and/or The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and completed in Canada.
International Medical Graduates:
o Must have a valid ECFMG certificate (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)

A complete application must include the following documents
1. Curriculum Vitae
2. Brief Personal Statement
3. Medical School Diploma and Transcript
4. Dean's Letter
5. USMLE Parts I, II, III scores (must be first pass)
6. ABSITE scores and reports for ALL years completed
7. Three (3) current Letters of Recommendation. Before any final decision to offer a position, a letter from the current Program Director will be required.
8. Competency-Based Evaluations for ALL completed rotations
9. Current ACGME case log, including the “Defined Category” Operative Report
10. ACLS and ATLS certifications
11. FES Curriculum/Certification: Level 1 (PGY1) must be completed; Level 2 (PGY2) can be 'in progress' - please provide a written description of your current FES curriculum status.
