Job Purpose
The Safety Director is a senior, enterprise-level leader responsible for setting the strategic direction and governance of safety, risk, and workers’ compensation programs across the organization. This role operates at the corporate level, influencing company-wide policy, culture, and performance.
Reporting to executive leadership, the Safety Director designs and leads comprehensive safety and workers’ compensation strategies that protect employees, reduce risk exposure, control costs, and support long-term business objectives. This leader partners closely with executives, operations, legal, HR, and insurance partners to ensure regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across all construction operations.
What You'll Do
- Establish and lead the enterprise-wide safety and risk management strategy, aligning safety initiatives with corporate goals, financial performance, and operational priorities.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on safety trends, risk exposure, workers’ compensation performance, and regulatory impacts.
Develop and monitor leading and lagging safety metrics, providing executive-level reporting, insights, and recommendations. - Develop, standardize, and continuously improve corporate safety policies, programs, and procedures across all business units and construction projects.
- Ensure full compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including Cal/OSHA, and proactively adapt programs to regulatory changes.
- Oversee enterprise risk assessments, hazard analyses, and control strategies to reduce incident frequency and severity. Provide corporate oversight for emergency response planning and crisis management.
- Lead the workers’ compensation program, including claims strategy, vendor oversight, return-to-work programs, and cost containment initiatives.
- Partner with legal counsel, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators to manage claims effectively and reduce litigation, lost time, and overall claim costs.
- Establish corporate standards for safety training, ensuring consistent, high-quality programs across all levels of the organization.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the corporate safety team, building a high-performing, strategically focused safety organization.
Requirements
What You'll Bring
- Proven experience in a corporate or enterprise-level safety leadership role, ideally within a large or multi-project construction organization.
- Deep expertise in workers’ compensation program management, including claims strategy, carrier and TPA coordination, return-to-work programs, and cost reduction.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Cal/OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to translate safety performance and risk data into strategic, executive-level insights.
- Experience influencing executive leadership and cross-functional partners to drive organization-wide change.
- Strong background in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and enterprise risk mitigation.
- Experience managing and developing teams of safety professionals, with a focus on leadership, accountability, and growth.
- Familiarity with safety management systems, claims analytics, and reporting tools.
- Exceptional communication, judgment, and discretion when handling sensitive, confidential, and legally protected information.
- Calm, decisive leadership style with the ability to navigate high-risk or crisis situations effectively.
